Friends of Bawumia Make Strong Case for His 2028 Presidential Bid

Friends of Bawumia (FOB), a pro-Bawumia advocacy group, has issued a compelling call to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to allow Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia the opportunity to lead the party once again into the 2028 presidential elections.

In a press statement released earlier today, the group outlined several historical and strategic reasons to support their demand, citing cost-saving measures, party unity, and Dr. Bawumia’s social capital as key motivations.
FOB argues that presidential success within the NPP has always followed a path of perseverance rather than instant victories. The group referenced former President John Agyekum Kufuor’s win in the 2000 elections after a second attempt, as well as President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s ultimate victory in 2016 on his third try, after defeating Alan Kyerematen in multiple internal contests.

“No one has ever won on their first attempt,” the statement emphasized. “It takes resilience, national acceptance, party unity, and time-tested trust to win the Ghanaian electorate.”
With the NDC expected to present a fresh face in the 2028 race, FOB believes Dr. Bawumia’s already-established national image places the NPP in a more advantageous position.

“Dr. Bawumia has built a national brand, cultivated strong grassroots support, and—most importantly—his social capital stretches across religious, regional, generational, and economic lines,” the group stated.
Beyond electoral advantage, FOB expressed concern over the potential cost and damage that a new round of internal flagbearership primaries might cause. With the NPP in opposition and still reeling from the 2024 electoral loss, the group believes the party cannot afford another divisive and resource-draining internal contest.

“The aftermath of the 2024 elections has left fractures within our ranks. Rekindling internal rivalry through another contentious flagbearer race risks deepening those cracks,” the statement warned. “Let us choose continuity over conflict.”
FOB concluded its appeal by urging the NPP leadership and base to rally behind Dr. Bawumia, whom they believe is the most strategic and unifying choice for the party going into the 2028 elections.

Dr. Bawumia, who led the NPP into the 2024 elections, is yet to formally declare his intentions for 2028. However, today’s FOB statement adds to the party’s growing conversation about its future direction.
