Prez Mahama Calls For Immediate Investigation Into Deaths Of 2020 and 2024 General Elections

Accra, Ghana – President John Dramani Mahama has formally called for an immediate investigation into the tragic deaths of eight Ghanaians that occurred during the 2020 and 2024 general elections. The request, directed to the Inspector-General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, seeks to ensure justice for the victims and their families.

In a letter issued from the Office of the President and signed by Callistus Mahama, Secretary to the President, Mr. Mahama highlighted that the incidents, which occurred across different parts of the country, have left a significant scar on Ghana’s democratic process. He emphasized the need for transparency and accountability to restore public trust and uphold the integrity of the nation’s democracy.

To achieve a comprehensive and efficient investigation, the letter outlined the following proposals:

  1. Establishment of a Dedicated Investigative Taskforce: A specialized task force within the CID will focus solely on these cases to ensure undivided attention and effective handling.
  2. Collaboration with Witnesses and Families: The investigation will include thorough interviews with eyewitnesses, victims’ families, and other individuals who may provide critical information.
  3. Review of Electoral Security Arrangements: The role and actions of security personnel deployed at polling stations will be scrutinized to assess their involvement or oversight.
  4. Use of Forensic Evidence: Advanced forensic techniques, including analyzing bullet casings, weaponry, and physical evidence from the crime scenes, will be employed.
  5. Collaboration with Electoral and Civic Bodies: Reports from the Electoral Commission and other relevant agencies regarding the 2020 and 2024 elections will also be reviewed for additional context.

The letter further requested periodic updates on the progress of the investigation to maintain transparency and keep stakeholders informed.

Mr. Mahama expressed confidence in the competence and professionalism of the Criminal Investigations Department, stating his trust that the investigation will yield justice for the victims and their families while preserving the democratic process.

The request was also copied to the Vice President and the Chief of Staff at Jubilee House, underscoring its urgency and importance.

This initiative represents a commitment to uncover the truth and ensure accountability for incidents that have marred the country’s electoral process.
