GNFS Takes Bold Measures to Prevent Market Fires in Ghana

As part of reforms aimed at resolving the recurring issue of market fires, the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has unveiled a series of comprehensive measures to safeguard lives, properties, and the livelihoods of traders across the country. These bold steps are part of a broader strategy to mitigate fire risks in key markets and ensure the safety of the nation’s economic hubs.

In a press release issued on January 14, 2025, the Chief Fire Officer, Julius A. Kuunuor, outlined the following initiatives:

1. Round-the-Clock Fire Cover

To enhance market safety, the GNFS will deploy personnel and fire appliances to various markets nationwide from 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM daily. This initiative provides continuous fire surveillance and ensures swift response to emergencies during critical hours.

2. Market Patrol Task Force

A dedicated task force will patrol markets daily to maintain vigilance and respond promptly to fire outbreaks. This effort is expected to minimize risks and provide peace of mind to traders and market-goers.

3. Establishment of Fire Units in Key Markets

The GNFS will set up permanent fire units and posts in major markets nationwide. These units will focus on:

  • Providing fire safety education.
  • Conducting regular inspections.
  • Ensuring compliance with fire safety protocols.

4. Daily Situation Reporting

All GNFS personnel assigned to market protection will submit daily Situation Reports (SITREPS) to the National Headquarters Operations platform for review and necessary action. This real-time data collection ensures accountability and enhances operational efficiency.

5. Collaboration with Key Stakeholders

To bolster the effectiveness of these measures, the GNFS will collaborate closely with market authorities, the Ghana Police Service, and National Security. This partnership aims to ensure coordinated surveillance, protection, and swift response to incidents.
