Deaf Can Talk Donates Assistive Devices to Final Year Deaf Students in Kasoa

In a remarkable gesture of commitment to inclusive education, Deaf Can Talk, an impact-based organization dedicated to empowering the deaf community, has donated assistive tablets to deaf students at Odupongkpene M/A Primary School in the Kasoa municipality. The initiative aims to enhance their social interactions and academic performance.

The CEO of Deaf Can Talk, Ike Agyei Mensah, expressed his excitement about the impact of their intervention. He highlighted that a previous engagement with the students using the Deaf Can Talk app demonstrated a positive shift in their learning outcomes.

“Barely some months ago, we were here to engage our deaf learners in the classroom, using the Deaf Can Talk app as an assistive tool to improve their literacy skills and social interactions. Through this period, students accessed the device and saw its ability to take notes while classes were in progress,” he stated.
Following a thorough data collection process, the organization identified a need for permanent assistive tools to support the student’s learning experience. Ike Agyei Mensah assured the students that Deaf Can Talk would provide them with customized assistive devices to facilitate communication and learning, both in and outside the classroom.

“Before we left, based on the data we collected, we saw an improvement in their learning outcomes and social interactions. We promised to return with assistive devices, and today, we are here to fulfill that promise,” he added.
The headmistress of Odupong Ofaakor M/A Basic A Inclusive School, Doris, commended the initiative, noting its transformative impact.

“Our school is the only inclusive school in Kasoa that accommodates both hearing and deaf students. Previously, our deaf students had low academic performance and irregular attendance. However, after the intervention by Deaf Can Talk, we noticed a significant improvement in their performance and class participation. They are now more engaged, attending school regularly, and actively interacting with their peers,” she remarked.

Despite this progress, the headmistress emphasized the need for additional support, revealing that out of approximately 50 deaf students in the school, only three had benefited from the pilot project.
“We lack the necessary devices to effectively teach these children. This is the first intervention of its kind, and we hope that other NGOs and stakeholders will come on board to extend this initiative to more students,” she appealed.
