From BET to Billion-Dollar Resorts: The Unstoppable Rise of Sheila Johnson

At the Forbes 30/50 Summit, Sheila Johnson, CEO of Salamander Hotels & Resorts, philanthropist, sports team owner, and co-founder of BET, sat down with Forbes senior editor Maggie McGrath to reflect on her remarkable career, the lessons she’s learned, and the principles that guide her as a leader and entrepreneur.

Believing in People: The Foundation of Leadership
Johnson’s entrepreneurial instincts were evident even in her 20s, long before she became a powerhouse in multiple industries. When asked how she honed her business acumen, she emphasized the importance of believing in people.

“I really do believe in people and bringing them along,” she said. For Johnson, leadership isn’t just about authority, it’s about empathy, mentorship, and inspiration. She lives by the acronym HARP: Honest, Authentic, Respectful, Passionate.
“I have to teach my employees and work with them to buy into my vision,” she explained. Hiring the right people is crucial, those who align with the company’s mission. Her philosophy? “Hire slowly, fire fast.”
Sticking to Values in the Face of Short-Term Pressures
One of the most defining moments of Johnson’s career was during BET’s IPO, where she clashed with her co-founder over the company’s direction. While others prioritized quick profits, she fought for a value-driven approach, particularly in programming.

“There were too many people interested in the bottom line, how to make money fast,” she recalled. “But that money doesn’t last.”
She pushed for smarter content, launching Teen Summit to educate young viewers, a move that reflected her commitment to substance over spectacle.
Overcoming Adversity and Rebuilding Herself
Despite her success, Johnson faced years of being overlooked at BET. She credits therapy and her mother for helping her regain confidence after an abusive relationship left her feeling lost.
“I didn’t know who I was,” she admitted. But through resilience, she rebuilt her life, venturing into the luxury hotel industry with no prior experience.

Today, Salamander Hotels & Resorts is a Forbes-recognized brand, with her Middleburg property earning 15 stars, one of only 13 in the world to achieve that honor.
Breaking Barriers in Sports Ownership
Johnson is the only Black woman to hold ownership stakes in three professional sports leagues (NBA, NHL, WNBA). Her entry into sports was serendipitous, after Ted Leonsis offered her the Washington Mystics, she negotiated ownership in the Wizards and Capitals as well.
