A Call for Reform and Rediscovery

Agyarko acknowledges that the call for rebranding is a tacit admission that the NPP has deviated from its traditional values, losing its sense of direction and identity. He warns that this shift has tarnished the party’s brand, making it less appealing to both members and the general public.

Quoting John Gardner’s book Self-Renewal, he emphasizes that “no organization in the Church, business, or government can survive unless it re-examines its purpose and returns to its original agenda.” He argues that the NPP must use the lessons of the past to shape the future rather than simply reminiscing about its history.

Restoring the NPP’s Core Values

Agyarko outlines several key values that should define the NPP’s rebranding effort:

  1. Respect for Fundamental Rights and Freedoms – Ensuring that every individual’s dignity is protected.
  2. Property Rights and Economic Freedom – Upholding Thomas Paine’s principle that property should only be taken under justifiable public necessity.
  3. Devolution of Power – Shifting governance from central authorities to local communities for effective policymaking.
  4. Market Economy and Enterprise Promotion – Encouraging business growth while safeguarding the vulnerable.
  5. Institutional Strengthening – Building sound democratic institutions that uphold governance and justice.
  6. Cultural and Religious Identity – Recognizing the role of religious organizations, traditional leadership, and civil society.
  7. Economic Fairness – Preventing monopolization of national resources and ensuring equal opportunities in education, healthcare, and employment.
  8. Business-Friendly Climate – Removing bureaucratic barriers to allow private enterprise to thrive.

A Vision for a Stronger NPP

According to Agyarko, the NPP must recommit itself to these values if it hopes to remain a dominant force in Ghanaian politics. He calls for a system that promotes equal opportunities, peace, and prosperity, ensuring that Ghana remains free from dictatorship and oppression.

“We must restore the ideological brilliance of our party so that more people will desire to march under its colors,” he asserts.

Implications for the Party’s Future

Agyarko’s reflections come at a crucial time when the NPP faces internal challenges ahead of the 2028 elections. His call for rebranding suggests growing concerns among party faithful about its current trajectory. Whether the leadership will adopt his recommendations remains to be seen, but his message resonates with many who believe the NPP must reconnect with its grassroots base.
