Now AI Designs Websites in Minutes! Is It Game Over for Web Designers?

Kumasi Entrepreneurs Community. Featuring insights from Evelyn Deladem Ansi,Dr. Tinagyie & Franz Alex

Not long ago, the idea of building a website required hours of coding, design skills, and, often, a professional web developer. But today, we’re standing at the edge of a new era. As one community member bluntly put it:

“Now, AI designs websites in minutes! It’s game over for website designers.”

It’s a bold claim, and one that sparked quite the debate among members of the Kumasi Entrepreneurs Community, especially as we watch AI’s rapid evolution reshape industries in real-time. But is it really over for web designers and developers? Or are we simply in the middle of a necessary transformation?

The AI Tools That Are Changing the Game

Community member Dr. Tinagyei was quick to confirm the growing capabilities of AI in web design:

“I can testify to this fact ooo.”

He listed a suite of powerful tools that anyone, regardless of skill level, can now use to launch a website in minutes:
• Wix
• Webador
• SITE123
• Hostinger
• GetResponse
• Framer

Each of these platforms leverages artificial intelligence to automate complex design and layout decisions. What used to take weeks can now be done in hours, or even less. For simple websites and e-commerce pages, it’s hard to argue with the convenience and affordability.

But What About the Software Engineers?

Franz Alex, a geospatial software engineer, stepped in with a more grounded take:

“I doubt it is [game over]. In my specific field, you can use AI to give you a heavy boost. It however won’t do the work 100% error-free.”

He shared that for larger projects, those stretching past 2000 lines of code, AI becomes a tool, not a replacement. While generative AI can speed up repetitive or templated tasks, it often struggles with:
• Contextual understanding
• Edge-case testing
• Large-scale debugging

In fact, Franz has spent over 30 minutes fixing AI-generated bugs that stemmed from what’s now known as “AI hallucinations.”

What is AI Hallucinations? In generative AI, hallucination refers to when a model generates info or outputs that aren't based on actual input data or facts. This can result in inaccuracies, false claims, or even fabricated details that might sound plausible but are entirely made-up.

Still, he acknowledged that sometimes the output from Generative AI- [GenAI] is so elegant that even he can’t optimize it further. That’s both awe-inspiring and slightly unsettling.

The Real Threat: AI’s Rapid Evolution

Tinagyei shifted the conversation toward a more existential concern:

“The real issue with AI is its rapid improvement in quality. The ability to learn quickly is sometimes borderline scary.”

He pointed to tools like Google’s Veo 3, a text-to-video AI model now capable of producing short clips with stunning realism. Once average at best, it’s now approaching cinematic quality. And yes, it’s embedded with SynthID, a watermarking system designed to help distinguish real from synthetic videos, but the tech is moving so fast that regulation and safeguards are struggling to keep up.

What Separates the Safe from the Replaced?

The most poignant observation may have come from Franz Alex’s final remarks:

“If any ‘unskilled person’ can conceptualize what you’re coding in 500 words, then GenAI has already taken your job.”

He argues that the future of human developers hinges not on routine tasks, but on creativity and problem-solving. The ability to:
• Break down unfamiliar challenges
• Think laterally
• Reconstruct problems into solutions

These are the true differentiators.

“It is that creativity… that will eventually separate people whose jobs are taken over by AI, from those whose jobs are secure for the time being.”

Final Thoughts

AI isn’t coming for your job. It’s coming for tasks, especially the repetitive, predictable ones. For website designers and developers, that means the landscape is shifting rapidly. The professionals who survive, and thrive, will be those who evolve from coders into creative engineers, strategic thinkers, and problem solvers.

AI is here. But so is human ingenuity.
