Agyeman Attafuah Responds to Revocation Letter: “I’m Happily Retired”

In a detailed statement addressing a widely circulated letter allegedly revoking his appointment as Executive Secretary of the National Identification Authority (NIA), Professor Ken Agyeman Attafuah has clarified that he retired from public service in November 2024. The letter, dated January 16, 2025, and purportedly issued by the Office of the President, directed Prof. Attafuah to hand over his duties to Wisdom Kwaku Deku, newly appointed Acting Executive Secretary of NIA.

Prof. Attafuah confirmed engaging in discussions with Dr. Callistus Mahama, Secretary to the President, to resolve the matter. During these conversations, he outlined key facts, emphasizing that he officially exited the NIA following the expiration of his post-retirement contract on November 13, 2024, four days after his 65th birthday. At that time, he handed over responsibilities to Mahama Suleman Sualihu, NIA’s Director of Internal Audit, who has been acting in the role since November 14, 2024.

Prof. Attafuah noted that Dr. Callistus Mahama assured him the letter would be withdrawn, acknowledging that its issuance was likely an oversight. However, despite assurances, he stated that the letter was merely retrieved from the NIA office without a formal withdrawal. Prof. Attafuah called for a clear written withdrawal to “kill the mischief” and prevent misinterpretation of his status.

The former Executive Secretary described his interactions with Dr. Mahama as cordial and expressed confidence that the matter would be fully resolved.

“I’m happily retired and not serving as Executive Secretary of NIA. Any suggestion to the contrary is false and should be disregarded,” Prof. Attafuah concluded.
The incident highlights the need for careful administrative oversight to avoid unnecessary confusion and embarrassment for public officials, particularly those who have dutifully exited public service.
