The Bullying Epidemic in Ghanaian Senior High Schools

Bullying, locally referred to as “homoing,” is more than just occasional intimidation; it involves physical abuse, humiliation, and coercion, creating a cycle where victims often become future perpetrators. A 2022 study by the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) revealed that 40% of SHS students have experienced bullying, while research from the University of Cape Coast (UCC) indicates that 47.5% of all reported cases involve physical bullying. The World Health Organization (WHO) further highlights that bullying leads to severe anxiety, depression, and long-term trauma.

To gain deeper insights, Fihankra Communications conducted a survey across SHS institutions in the Greater Accra Region, and the alarming findings shall be revealed on the pitch day.

The Goal of the ‘Be A Buddy, Not A Bully’ Campaign

The campaign seeks to reduce bullying incidents in senior high schools within Greater Accra by changing attitudes and behaviors. The primary objectives include:

  • Changing students’ perception of bullying as a rite of passage from 70% to 20%.
  • Reducing student participation in bullying from 65% to 30%.

Through behavioral change strategies, awareness campaigns, and public engagements, Fihankra Communications aims to foster a culture of kindness and inclusivity in Ghanaian high schools.

EPP Books Services: The Force Behind the Campaign

The campaign is proudly sponsored by EPP Books Services, a company dedicated to education and youth development. Founded in 1991, EPP Books Services has grown from a small bookstore in Accra into a West African publishing powerhouse, operating in Ghana, Benin, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone.

The company believes in giving back to the community, and this campaign aligns with its mission to support education, personal development, and youth well-being. Since students are key consumers of EPP’s books, the company sees this initiative as a meaningful way to protect and uplift the next generation.
