Dennis Larbi Accuses Government of Hypocrisy and Broken Promises

Dennis Appiah Larbi, a voice in Ghanaian civic and political discourse, has reignited national debate on illegal mining, locally known as galamsey, with a powerful critique of what he termed the “hypocrisy and political double standards” surrounding efforts to fight the environmental menace. Speaking on Joy Prime’s Prime Morning, Larbi called on government to fulfill its long-standing promise to declare a state of emergency over the galamsey crisis.

“The Ghanaian people were promised radical action. Now cabinet ministers, including Hon. Samuel Abu Jinapor and Sam George, vowed a state of emergency and claimed the galamsey problem could be resolved in just a week,” Larbi emphasized.
“Today, the crisis persists, and all we’ve seen is a million-cedi event at Kempinski, not a meaningful solution.”
Larbi accused the now opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) and rulling National Democratic Congress (NDC) of politicizing a national crisis, calling their rhetoric empty and counterproductive.

“Both parties have played politics with this. Galamsey is Ghana’s drug crisis. It is barbaric and knows no political colors. We must all unite, not flip-flop and grandstand,” he said.

He further criticized recent measures by the government, such as the registration of excavators and the deployment of “water guards,” as recycled and ineffective strategies.
“Excavator registration is not a new policy, it’s been a requirement since day one. Water guards have existed since 2014. Nothing new has been brought to the table.”
Larbi also challenged President John Mahama’s campaign promise to pardon illegal miners and go after galamsey kingpins, accusing the NDC of emboldening illegal miners without delivering on their word.
“The promise to pardon galamseyers gave them hope that the NDC was on their side. Yet, it’s still the young men on the ground being arrested. Where are the kingpins?” he asked.

Highlighting inconsistencies in political narratives, Larbi pointed to reports like that of Prof. Frimpong-Boateng, which allegedly exposed the involvement of party executives in illegal mining.
“The problem isn’t one-sided. It’s systemic. It’s the broken promises, the shallow policies, and the performative concern that keep us trapped.”

In a resounding call to action, Dennis Appiah Larbi urged the government to declare a state of emergency now, not as a political gimmick, but as a genuine national response to a problem endangering Ghana’s environment, water bodies, and future.
“All Ghanaians are saying one thing: do what you said you would do. That’s all. No more events. No more talk. Solve galamsey.”
