Tema Port Sees 25% Drop in Accidents, Fire Cases Reduced by Over 60% – DCFO Reveals at Safety Day Event”

In an address marking the 2025 World Day for Safety and Health at Work, Deputy Chief Fire Officer Cynthia Bunyan Adzaklo, Fire and Safety Manager at Tema Port, revealed encouraging statistics showing a significant drop in workplace incidents at the port.

Speaking at the event held on the 2nd floor of the GPHA Towers, DCFO Cynthia announced that accidents at the port reduced from 44 in the last quarter of 2024 to 33 in the first quarter of 2025, representing a 25% decline. More notably, fire outbreaks saw an even sharper reduction—from 16 cases to just 6 in the same timeframe, marking a 62.5% drop.

“This progress is a testament to the impact of teamwork, proactive hazard identification, and the commitment of our safety committees,” she said. She emphasized that while digital innovations are crucial, “even the most advanced safety tools are powerless if the people using them do not prioritize safety in their daily actions.”

The event was opened by the Director of Port, Mr. Tebon Zumah, who used his first public appearance since his appointment to express his firm commitment to safety.

Under my leadership, safety will become a key topic at every management meeting,” he assured. “Tema Port will not only maintain but elevate its status as the safest port in the West African subregion.”

Also addressing the gathering, the IT Manager of GPHA discussed upcoming improvements to the port’s surveillance systems, including the integration of AI-driven cameras and real-time threat detection tools.

​“We are building smarter systems that will work hand-in-hand with human vigilance to create a safer environment,” he said.

In a presentation that focused on worker health and wellness, the Health Management Unit delivered a talk on ergonomics at work, highlighting the effects of poor posture and repetitive strain injuries. Staff were encouraged to follow best practices for lifting, sitting, and workstation design to reduce long-term health risks.

The event concluded with a renewed sense of collaboration across departments, as attendees were reminded that building a strong safety culture is not only the role of management, but a shared responsibility of every worker at the port.
