How One Man Is Building Africa’s Gaming Industry from Scratch

When we think about gaming, our minds often drift toward Sony, Microsoft, or massive game franchises from the U.S., Japan, or Europe. But in a small studio in Ghana, Eyram Tawia is on a mission to flip that script. He’s not just making video games, he’s building an entire ecosystem to tell African stories through immersive, digital experiences.

In our recent episode on DTC OfficialGH, I sat down with Eyram, the CEO and co-founder of Leti Arts, one of Africa’s pioneering game development studios. What unfolded was one of the most insightful, inspiring, and eye-opening conversations I’ve had on the African tech and creative space.

The Mission: Telling African Stories Through Games
Leti Arts is more than a gaming studio. It’s a cultural powerhouse, using interactive media, mobile games, and comics to reframe the African narrative. From ancient legends like Yaa Asantewaa to modern themes like civic engagement and sexual health, Eyram and his team are creating “serious games” that both entertain and educate.
He summed it up beautifully:
“Until the last Korean child plays a game about Yaa Asantewaa or Mansa Musa, we are not stopping.”
That statement isn’t just passion, it’s purpose. And it’s the kind of thinking that can position Africa at the center of global creative innovation.

Why Africa Has a Unique Advantage
Despite infrastructure issues, Eyram believes Africa has already leapfrogged into the future of mobile gaming. From Symbian and Java phones in the early 2000s to the present, where streaming is now available on 4G networks, the continent is poised for digital innovation, provided we develop local talent.
But there’s a catch.
“We have brilliant programmers, artists, and storytellers, but no one is teaching them how to make games.”

That’s where Leti Arts steps in with a growing network of training programs and their newly launched Team Academy, focused on filling the skills gap and blending art with engineering.
